So, the task is to pick a favorite record from every year that you’ve been alive. I’m operating entirely on the basis of what my favorite record from that year is at this precise moment in time. Here goes nothin’:

1984:the Minutemen, Double Nickels on the Dime (the Replacements’ Let it Be is a close second)

1985: Tom Waits, Rain Dogs

1986: Beastie Boys, Licensed to Ill (close second: Springsteen Live 1975-85)

1987: Dinosaur Jr, You’re Living All Over Me

1988: Pixies, Surfer Rosa

1989: Pixies, Doolittle (close second: Operation Ivy, Energy)

1990: Sonic Youth, Goo

1990 (then): Vanilla Ice, To The Extreme (close second: MC Hammer, Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘Em)

1991: A Tribe Called Quest, The Low End Theory

1992: Sublime, 40 Oz. to Freedom (Close second: Beastie Boys, Check Your Head)

1992 (then): Kriss Kross, Totally Krossed Out

1993: 311, Music (still; nothing else that year does it for me)

1993 (then): Shaquille O’Neal, Shaq Diesel (yikes…)

1994: Green Day, Dookie (It was my favorite album back then, too…weird.)

1995: Rancid, …And Out Come the Wolves

1995 (then): Dave Matthews Band, Under the Table and Dreaming

1996: Sublime, Sublime

1996 (then): 311, 311 (close second: Smashing Pumpkins, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness)

1997: Built to Spill, Perfect From Now On

1997 (then): Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, Pushing the Salmonella Envelope (or at least the song “High”)

1998: Neutral Milk Hotel, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

1998 (then): probably Marilyn Manson. Or Coal Chamber.

1999: the Dismemberment Plan, Emergency & I

1999 (then): the Insane Clown Posse discography. All of it. And Slipknot.

2000: Modest Mouse, Building Nothing Out of Something

2000 (then): Deftones, White Pony

2001: the Strokes, Is This It (I’m as surprised as you are)

2001 (then): Probably the same; that record had a big impact, which you can see in the rest of the list

2002: Wilco, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (not-so-close second: Trail of Dead, Source Tags and Codes)

2003: Explosions in the Sky, The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place (close second: Broken Social Scene, You Forgot it in People)

2003 (then): My Morning Jacket, It Still Moves

2004: Wilco, A Ghost is Born

2005: Sigur Rós, Takk…

2005 (then): Tiger Bear Wolf, Tiger Bear Wolf (Close second: Sufjan Stevens, Illinois)

2006: the Hold Steady, Boys and Girls in America

2006 (then): Bruce Springsteen, We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions

2007: the National, Boxer (very close second: Panda Bear, Person Pitch)

2008: the Hold Steady, Stay Positive
